Kids picking their call name

My older child, Raymond-called-Ray, started kindergarten a few weeks ago.  Before, at his preschool, the teachers asked for a child's call name and used that only -- so he was always Ray at school, just as his sister, Margaret-called-Daisy, is Daisy at school.

His kindergarten asks only for legal name, and although we introduced him to his teacher as Ray, they use "Raymond" for most things at school.   I remember from my own schooldays multiple classmates who were called full names by the teachers (Jennifer, Suzanna, Megan) and another thing by their friends (Jen, Zan, Meg).  I assumed Ray would do the same, but no! He's been asking his classmates to use his full name, so all the kids in his class call him "Raymond".  That, I did not expect.

I did the same. I know what periods of life certain friends entered it based on what they call me. :-)

Today I found out WHY he's decided to go by Raymond -- he has a classmate named Raymier who also uses Ray as a nckname, and neither of them wants to be Ray + initial, so they're Raymond and Raymier.

I'm laughing, because I always figured he'd never run into the Ray + initial thing at school, because Raymond's such an unpopular name these days!  Never would have predicted Raymier.

OK, today I had a parent-teacher conference and like any good name enthusiast I snooped on the names of classmates.

There are 4 Rays in my son's class.

Rayna and Rayhanah (pronounced like Ray + Hannah) are girls, and my Raymond & Raymeir are boys.  (I'd assumed from the pronunciation of Raymeir's name that it was "Raymier", but it's not.)

Oh, woah! How many kids are in that clas altogether?  That's a whole lot of Rays!

23 kids!  I was amazed.

That is an example of what we on this blog used to call the Ethel Mae Postulate. A rare name pops up in pockets and seems to be everywhere.
