Middle Name for Frederick

We just found out that our baby is a boy! We have had a first name for a boy picked out since being pregnant with our daughter. We just are not sure on a middle name, but it's down to three. Our last name is like Simmer but starts with a T.

Frederick Florian

Frederick Francis

Frederick Robert

Which is your favorite? They are all family names, and while I like the names Florian and Francis I am not sure if I like the alliteration or not. But Frederick Robert just seems a little boring to me. If it matters, we plan on using the nickname Fritz.

Oooh, I really love Frederick Florian! I enjoy a bit of contrast between first and middle, and Florian really fits the bill there—still a classic name, but with some real romantic, Latinate flair beside the more stately Germanic Frederick. I don't have a problem with alliteration as long as other prominent sounds are not also repeated, and I think these two names sound really catchy together. Florian is also just a name I happen to think is really cool and I'd love to see more of.

I agree with your assessment of Frederick Robert—it's perfectly fine, but they're both classics of the same dimension, so to speak, so it ends up being a more one-note name compared to the multidimensional Frederick Florian. Frederick Francis is somewhere in between, but the repeated Fr- as opposed to Fr/Fl makes the alliteration more monotonous.

I really appreciate your thoughts on this! Florian is my husband's grandpa's name and I've always thought it was cool but I don't know if I'd ever be brave enough to use it as a first. Your comment about how they contrast is so true and I think that's why I am leaning toward this one.

You made literally every single point that I was going to make. Thanks for saving me the typing ;)

I agree totally. Love Frederick Florian. In fact Florian is one of those names I love but goes on and off my list. It is perfect with Frederick as a first. The aliteration is pleasing to me without being repetitive.

Frederick Robert is perfectly fine if a little classic for my taste. I know a sibling pair of Frederick and Robert!

Again agree the Frederick Francis is somewhere in the middle - the aliteration is fine but not as pleasing and it's more classic in combination. It's probably my least favourite but all 3 combos are solid.

I love the idea of Fritz as a nickname!

I like Frederick Robert,  if you find it a little boring what about Frederick Rupert or Roberto - I think Frederick Robert is nice - others Zahi, Zahir, Bertram, Lucien, Raibert, Riordan, Zavier

Florian is ok but Frederick Francis I dont think flows well

other names with the same meaning as Francis - Carl, Charles, Amadi, Paco, Paquito, Pancho, Darby, Dermot

Anthony has the same meaning as Florian - Frederick Anthony is nice

Thanks for your suggestions! I do like Rupert and had brought that up previously to my husband but he was not a fan.

I personally do not like alliteration, so I would go for Frederick Robert if it were me. That being said, I think you have to make it work for YOU. It seems like you aren't 100% sold on any ofthem, so do you have any other options? Or any family names here that are more significant to you than the others?

I like the combination Frederick Florian (and my son's first and middle initials are J.J.) - but his initials would be F.F.S., which I know as 'for f*cks sake'. None of his friends might ever notice, and if they do, they might find it cool (quite likely), but I guess this is something you should consider beforehand.

If you read the original post again, the last name actually starts with a T.

I stand corrected! Forget my comment, initials F.F.T. is no problem at all.

Like may others, I absolutely love Florian, on its own merits and as a middle for Frederick.

Ditto!

I happen to generally enjoy alliteration, in moderation, and I think this combination is a textbook example of exactly that.

Alliteration usually isn't my thing but I'm going to be the odd one out and say that there's something about Frederick Francis that's extremely appealing to my ear.  I really really like it.  I like the flow and I like that it sound so smooth.

I love that Florian is a family name though.  And this alliteration is not bad either, so your husband's grandfather's name would probably be the deciding factor for me.

I don't mind Frederick Robert; I've just never been a big fan of Robert in general.

Congratulations! Frederick, nn Fritz, is adorable, and I love all your mn choices.

I adore the name Florian! It's on my list as a mn. Although alliterative, Frederick and Florian are different enough that it doesn't matter much.

Francis is super cute, but Frederick and Francis are similar enough (both starting with Fr) that it seems a little clunky put together that way.

Frederick Robert is adorable - I actually really like Robert, mostly because of the nn Robbie, but if it seems boring to you, don't use it! It's worth remembering that it's only a mn, so although it will be used, it's not as big a deal to have the initials FFT as it would be to have alliterative first & last names.

If I had to choose, I'd go with Frederick Florian. It's so cute!
