My new niece

New niece was named Sund@y GR@ce

My side of the family is not enamored with the name ( baby born outside of marriage so my sibling had no say) but the baby attached to it is a little living doll!

We are tempted to call her Gr@ce but will not because we do not want to offend her mother.

So, hoping the brilliant posters on here can help us see the bright side of Sund@y.  Any positive  thoughts on this name?

To many, Sunday is a day of peace. Maybe this baby was meant to bring the related parties together to find a certain peacefulness in the situation. Not wanting to know about your personal history too much I will leave it at that.

Also, Nicole Kidman named her daughter Sund@y Rose. So maybe there is a connection somewhere there. Google Nicole's baby because I know that she gives some reasons for why she picked the name. I'm sure the adorable little one will show you all the way to make the best of things.

With Grace as the middle name...well, Sunday Grace sounds like the special prayer before the big family dinner after church.  That said, it could be a lot worse.  And how often will she be called by first and middle anyway?

Sunday isn't really that bad of a name on it's own.  I actually like it on Nicole Kidman's daughter, Sunday Rose.   A day of the week name might be less common, but is the idea really that different than girls named after months (May, June) or seasons (Autumn, Winter)?  It also seems consistent with other "word" names being used now (Skye and Lyric come to mind) so I wouldn't predict any special degree of playground teasing.

With some time, it'll grow on the family.  If anyone (perhaps older family members?) is particularly resistant, Sunny is an adorable nickname for a little girl and seems less forced/not as potentially offensive as using her middle name.

It sounds like a very religious name to me, which makes it kind of quaint and charming like the quirky old Puritan names (Salvation, Thankful, Resolved, Clemency, Be-Faithful, Make-peace, Fear-not, etc.).  Does that help?  I agree that Sunny is an adorable nn, and it's good that she has Grace to fall back on if she ever wants a more traditional name as an adult.  Sunday is pretty passable as calendar names go, too.  It's unusual, but not terrible--kind of sweet, really, and she sounds like she could be the heroine of a YA novel.  I hope the family is able to come together around her!

I like Sunday!  I am religious but aside from that it reminds me of Girl Friday and ice cream sundaes.  Sunday feels like a cute, spunky nickname to me-- as spunky and old fashioned as Pepper, Tess, and Olive.  Also, even for those who aren't religious, Sunday is the day of the week reserved for family-- like Sunday dinners with grandma.  A cute name!

Thank you everyone!  I love the comments on the name, and am starting to see it in a different light. Plus, once a name is attached to an adorable little person it becomes less of an issue.  I guess it's not as unusual as I thought, and certainly no more unusual than the names of some of my daughter's classmates.  We're just a traditionalist family when it comes to names, so were absolutely appalled when we first heard this "weird" name.  Reading this blog and forum in general has helped me to redefine "weirdness" in a name. And I agree, I don't think other kids will ever make fun of her, but I have gotten several snickers, etc. when I've told co-workers her name which is part of the reason I was so worried about it.  Thanks again for the kind comments!

I find Sunday a very charming name. The combo of Sunday Grace does remind me of saying a prayer before lunch on a Sunday but there are seriously much worse name combos!

I realise Sunday isn't to everyones taste but it does make me think of a charming little girl with a sunny disposition.

And you are right, once you attach the name to a real baby it gains a life of it's own.
