Need Inspo - What are your top 5 favourite girl names?

Hello ladies (and gentlemen?),

I had no idea choosing a name would be so stressful!

My partner and I are expecting our first child, a girl, in three weeks and are yet to decide on a name. I raised the subject yesterday and we both seem to be lacking inspiration, so I thought I’d pop onto the web and do a little searching and I came across this lovely site. Can you give me your top 5 favourite girl names? Hopefully this will give my partner and I the creative kick we need.

Thanks in advance,

hi Adelaide,  what sort of names do you like - popular, classic, Biblical, trendy, unique,  there are so many

any particular letters you like or any to avoid?  Long names?  Short?

any family names to consider?    have you got a list of those you do like?   I think a nice connection to mum would be the name Heidi

I like Amy, Sophie, Laura, Emma, Emily, Jessica, Lisa - yes I know more than 5

I agree a little more direction on your tastes or preferences would help us suggest names that are more suited to you (eg some names you like but are not "the one" for whatever reason, what are your feelings on popularity, do you want a name that is going to be easy for most people to say/spell when they first encounter it or are you willing to deal with correcting mistakes, do you like the idea of nickname options, do you have a preference on long vs short names etc etc). You could also try playing with the name matchmaker tool on this site; you can put in up to three names you like and set preferences for things like popularity and length and it will generate a whole list of suggestions.

Without knowing more about what you want our personal favourite names are going to be a fairly random bunch but in case it's somehow useful and since you asked: Lyra, Etta, Juniper, Jessamine, Orla, Joy, Verity

My favorites shift over time, but for inspiration's sake, here are some category favorites (more than five, alas), in no particular order:

  • Favorite "unisex/surname-style" name: Arden
  • Favorite "princess" name: Corisande (or maybe Melisande, I go back and forth)
  • Favorite "warrior fairy queen" name: Morwen(na) (I also like it as an alternative to Rowan/Rowena)
  • Favorite "little black dress" name: Elizabeth (favorite nickname for this is Eliza, but I like many many of the possibilities)
  • Favorite old-fashioned/Victorian name: Genevieve
  • Favorite civil rights/human rights honor names: Coretta, Mandela (These might be more or less usable depending on baby's personal context)
  • Favorite "geeking out" name: Tessera (especially if there is any plausible connection to the number four, and/or mosaic artwor, and/or time travel)
  • Favorite floral theme family of names: The Greek anthe names, e.g. Calanthe, Iolanthe, Diantha, etc.
  • Favorite gem name: Beryl
  • Favorite "fusty-clunky"/"Old Hollywood" name: Myrna

Favorite "place name-name": Venezia

My favourites change all the time, but here are a few that have recently arrived on my list:

Azalea - an uncommon flower name!

Daphne - I like how this name feels elegant and Greek but still can be playful.

Anastasia - I love this name, as well as just Stasia.

Sofia - I prefer Sofia with an f to Sophia with a ph. However, I also love Sophie (with a ph!)

Rosemary - A cute way to get the nickname Rose/Rosie. When she gets older, she could also choose to go by Mary, or by her full name. I love how it feels natural yet vintage!

agree with most everyone favorites change all the time but today I'll go with

Josephine nickname Josie for something more traditional

Cordelia or Calista for feminine

Aspen or Sage for Nature inspired

Selene is my top favorite right now

If you have any thoughts on what appeals the group here will give you tons of ideas that fit. Congrats!
