Nickname Cal

What do you think of this name? What type of person do you picture with it?

I want to name my little boy a name that will likely be shortened to Cal and I am not sure how I feel about it:)

I know a kid named Cal, he's maybe 6 now. I like it.

I like it. It's handsome and I don't think it's tied to any specific type of person. My main associations are Cal Ripkin Jr, and the lead character from the TV show Lie To Me.

I'm honestly kind of neutral about Cal, perhaps because I've never known one IRL.  I do think it is the type of name that could work on just about anybody.

I can't think of many names it could be a nickname for.  Calvin, Calum, Callen and perhaps Caleb are all that come to mind.

I love Cal and considered it for one of my boys, as a nn for Charles.

Calvin is cool - like the cartoon, Calvin and Hobbes :)

Caleb (pron. KAY-leb) is another name which could be shortened to Cal.

The other thing to bear in mind is that Superman's alien name is Kal-El. So he may get some superman references from boys, which is probably not a bad thing for a kid!

This Orioles fan says go with Cal.

The first person to come to mind was American president Calvin Coolidge, whose nickname was "Silent Cal." And then I remembered another Cal I know personally, a man in his 60s. I've never met or heard of any Cal younger than that.

When I think about the name itself, it evokes images of a little boy in the 1940s, knees dirty from a pickup game of baseball, running home for dinner when he hears his mother call. :) It's one of those names that isn't common anymore, but yet isn't considered weird or hard to say. Not a nickname to be ashamed of at all.

However, because it's not common anymore, I wonder how likely it will be for him to be called Cal? Would people even think of it nowadays?

My son's name is Callum and my husband calls him Cal. I've never known of another Cal except Cal Ripken Jr., so for me the name has grown to suit my son rather than the other way around.
