Nicknames for Madeleine

Ok--borrowing trouble as we aren't even pg yet, let alone pg with a girl!

Madeleine is a top contender for another DD (DS is Alex@nder aka Xander and DD is Ev@ngeline --leen ending; nn is Evie, Ee-vee). However, I've never been fond of the nn Maddie/Maddy/Mady/etc.

I like Linnie, but what I saw somewhere was the nn Millie for Madeleine. I *love* that. Is that too much of a stretch? Thanks!

Also, throw in any additional non-Maddie/Maddy nicknames you can think of! Thanks!

Madeleine (that spelling) is a name I used to love but has been ruined for me by the creative spellings and Maddy nicknames.  I do think it works with your sibset and if you are using that spelling and avoiding a Maddy-esque nickname then I'm all for it.

Millie wouldn't be that obvious but I think it could work. I think I'd prefer Millie for Millicent, Amelie or Amelia but it's not implausible.

Linnie is probably your next best bet but Delie or Delia are also good options. You could also do Adele or Adeline but then I'd be tempted to use them as the full name.

Mila or Mina/Minna could also work?

Your first paragraph is exactly my hesitation with the name! I really do love it, but it's kind of been ruined. Yet I almost feel like I want to restake a claim to the proper name and thumb my nose at those who have messed it up (sorry all the Maddylynn likers out there).

Linnie was my first choice until I saw Millie. Hubby vetoed all the "D" nicknames (including just Della), and I thought of Adele, but it's so attached to the singer, that I don't know if I could do that. I do love Adeline as a proper name itself, but it was vetoed as we're not sold on the duplicate initials thing.

I like the idea of Mina maybe. Mila is too "hot" right now with the celebrity set, that I want to veer away from it (plus my niece is Mailee -- pronounced Miley).

What about just Mae? That was almost DD's middle name...

Well, Madeleine is the French form of Magdalene/a, so maybe Maggie or Madge?

I love Mina and don't think it is popular.

No, I said Mila is too "hot" right now to use.

I do like Mina.

I think Madeleine can be reclaimed and using either the full name or an alternative nickname is a good start.

I agree that Mina doesn't seem particularly trendy right now and not overly popular. Mila is veering more on the trendy side.

Just Mae also works for me.

I like Mae!

I'm another who has watched the spellings and popularity of Madeleine with a touch of sadness - such a lovely name! I like the idea of reclaiming it.

Perhaps Leine/Lena or Lina (depending on your pronounciation)? I know a few Carolines called Lina so a Madeleine nn Lena or Lina wouldn't be a stretch at all for me.

Or - just a quick thought - perhaps Mal or Mallie?

While the pronunciation would be different, I also speak Spanish, and Mal means badly in Spanish, so I just couldn't do it. Nice thought though!

Fair point, that would put a bit of a downer on it!

Well, my one hesitation to using the name IRL is gone now. My cousin just found out they are having another boy (which will be interesting as they struggle with boys' names and this is their third one), so they will not be having their little Madelynn (Maddy). While I'm sad for them, I'm excited that the name would be open to not being shared (although we talked and were both cool with it since the spelling, nicknames, and last names would all be different).

Dh isn't fond of many of the nicknames though, so that may throw a wrench in things. I think he could go with Mae (especially since our DD's middle name was almost Mae). We'll see what happens if/when we get pg!

Thank you everyone for the input, I do appreciate it.
