Rank the Names!

This game is simple - just rank the names, in descending order with 1 being the best. You can respond to any of the previously put together lists and then put out your own list. Your list can be any length and can be all boys, all girls, or a mix of both (just make sure you clarify what gender on unisex names!) and it can have a theme or just be random.

Example round: One of my favorite nail polish brands, Zoya, gives all of their polishes womens' names, but, after more than 15 years and 900 polishes, they're occasionally grasping at straws for names sometimes. Their summer collection, Wanderlust, consisted of River, Lois, Sawyer, Cora, Byrdie, Esty (not to be confused with Etsy), Winnie, Sonja, Journey, Mandy, Scout, and Arbor, in this case all girls' names.

12. Arbor. It reads really masculine and who wants to be named after the most useless holiday, Arbor Day, Earth Day's boring little sister?

11. Scout. I really hate To Kill A Mockingbird, so that pretty much means I can't like this name it invented.

10. Esty. I get that it's short for Esther and/or Estelle, but it's hard not to say Etsy.

9. Sawyer. It's okay on girls, but I'd really it rather stay a boys' name and that pretty much means precluding it from being a girls' name.

8. River. Ditto.

7. Lois. Yeah, I know this is on track to be the next Penelope but I just can't really get behind it. I think Family Guy has this name taken forever. Sorry.

6. Journey. I may be a little biased since A) I love the band Journey and B) Journey was my favorite nail polish out of thsi collection but it's a bit wordy. Not the worst word name but not my style. The fact I can't really think of any good nicknames is another strike.

5. Byrdie. You know, I kinda like it. I'd go with Birdie as the spelling and not use it as a full name, but it's a darling nickname (especially for something like Robin or Wren or some other bird name!)

4. Cora. It's kind just okay. It was something I think I liked a little better before it started to catch on. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

3. Sonja. I've always had a soft spot for Sonja, and I don't know why it's not at all popular while Sophia reigns supreme. I'd usually say go with the spelling Sonia though, to avoid spelling & prounciation confusion, but this spelling is an anagram of Jason so it'd be a great way of honoring a familial Jason.

2. Mandy. I have a cousin Amanda so I've been partial to Mandy my whole life.

1. Winnie. I've always thought Winnifred was pretty but a little much and I hate how it lends itself to the nickname Fred, but I quite like Winnie. It's probably the only name I'd 100% say go straight to the nickname without the full form.

Next list (although you still can respond to this one if you like!): Mckenna, Beth, Joni, Presley, Hera, Padma, Hadley, Yvonne, Mona, Elaine, Tabitha, & Gal (all girls, in honor of Zoya's fall collection)

This was so hard because I like all the names!

15. Camellia - Not a huge fan of the sound and a little too close to Camille or Camilla as a name.

14. Magnolia - Pretty but hard to see as a name.

13. Poppy - I sort of like it but it feels a little too pretentious as a name. Wouldn't age well for a child IMO.

12. Zinnia - Love the Z but just a little too unfamiliar as a name.

11. Holly - Pretty but had a huge surge in the 70s so it stays there for me for now.

10. Sage - Pretty but a little on the new agey/hippie parent side for my taste.

9. Dahlia - Soft, pretty, and uncommon. Perhaps a slight downvote for connection to the Black Dahlia.

8. Clementine - I see parents who use this as maybe trying just a little too hard to stand out but it's lovely and I think of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

7. Ivy - Zippy and cool. Surprised it's not too popular yet.

6. Rose - Timeless and beautiful.

5. Daisy - A little fiesty, a little too cutesy perhaps but I love it.

4. Lily - Classic, soft, and sweet.

3. Rosemary - Same vibe as Hazel to me. Old fashioned but not fusty. Ready for revival.

2. Hazel - Love the Z. Old fashioned but not fusty.

1. Violet - Sweet and pretty but kind of a little edge to it. Feels like it should be much more popular.

15 Girl Names I like but wouldn't use- River, Brielle, Hadley, Brynlee, Gwendolyn, Sailor, Ellery, Addison, Cora, Ainsley, Sage, Ava, Aylee, Emberly, Finley

204
January 6, 2019 5:32 PM

This one was interesting because I could easily split the list into names I love, names I feel neutral on, and I names I strongly dislike. Not much in between.

15. Emberly - I don't even know what this is trying to be. Amber? Kimberly?

14. Aylee - Waaay to precious and cutesy. Try to picture it on a big, bulky girl or an adult woman.

13. Sailor - Not a name to me.

12. Brynlee - Bryn is lovely. I don't get the obsession with adding lee and leigh to existing names.

11. Brielle - Doesn't work as a name for me.

10. Addison - So popular in the last 10 years, it will go the way of Jessica and Jennifer of the past.

9. Ava - Mostly harmless but the amount of celebrities that have used it for their kids and the fact that it seems like 1 out of every 5 kids has this name makes me dislike it.

8. Ainsley - Overall kind of a cool name but that "ain" beginning sound is rough...

7. Hadley - I like the sound and would be a bigger fan if it wasn't so trendy.

6. Sage - It's like a vaguely hippie-ish nature name that seems to be the go-to for self-identified ~free spirit~ type parents but it ends up still being pretty common.

5. River - Another unisex name I like but wouldn't necessarily use.

4. Ellery - Growing on me lately. I like for either sex.

3. Gwendolyn - I tend to prefer shorter names but I love Gwendolyn.

2. Finley - I love Finley and Finlay for either sex but I might shy away from using it based on its sound-alike-ness to other trendy names like Kinley.

1. Cora - Antique but sounds fresh.

15. Reuben - I can only see a sandwich.

10. Josiah - Nice but I think of Josiah Duggar.

1. Quintessa - another guilty pleasure of the rare names; beautiful and flowing.

210

243
February 18, 2019 9:55 AM

I love Mara!! This was a few years ago, so I don’t remember the rationale for all of his vetoes, but I do remember a few memorable ones (Paloma “sounded like a medical condition“ and Cora “a bunch of random vowels and consonents). Adrienne got the boot because of Rocky. He is decidedly not a name enthusiast , and the name we eventually arrived on I love, though it is very popular. The popularity was actually my only concern, and though it wasnt top 10 when we did the naming, it is now and I still love it (though perhaps brave to admit so on this site?). We went with Amelia.

Aybee, I think Amelia is lovely and sweet!

13. Anton - Not a bad name but I just don't like the sound.

12. Anders - Feels pretentious.

11. Aidan - If not for the rise of Aidens, and all -ayden family names, I'd have liked it. I knew a kid with this name in Ireland in the 90s. Great sound, unfortunately rise in popularity. Much prefer this spelling to others though.

10. Aaron - Biblical, unoffensive, decent name.

9. Adam - Biblical, unoffensive, decent name.

8. Archer - Cool sound and not too common but feels very "now" and might be dated quickly.

7. Andrew - Classic, timeless.

6. Abel - People always cite Cain and Abel but I think it's moving away from that and I think it's a great name.

5. Ansel - Uncommon with a literary/creative flair.

4. Aston - Sort of ticks a lot of trendy name boxes but isn't popular at all. A hidden gem.

3. Asher - I am not religious but I love  a lot of Biblical boys names. It's not super common but familiar.

2. Ambrose - Soft and beautiful. Very Victorian feel.

1. Alexander - Strong, classic, timeless.

9- Anne- yawn

8- Alethea- pretty but too unfamiliar
