We decided on Lorelai in the end. And despite the reactions being confused (nobody has heard of it or if they have they can't place where they'v heard it before so I end up suggesting, Lorelei the myth of the Rhine? Lorelei played by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes? Gilmore girls? Blank confused faces.

Nobody can spell it either. It will always need explaining. People have misheard me and called her Loreline. And the worst so far has been the health visitor asking how Loreal is? Loreal! Gah! But whatever...

WE like it and that's what matters.

Thanks for the good advice we got. As always, this is THE best forum and you helped me 3 years ago with my first baby and have helped me with my second.

Congratulations on selecting a lovely name! I really like Lorelai, and I think it goes great with her big sister's name, too. I don't generally care much about sib-sets matching, but I do think your two daughters' names sound great together--they're very fun to say as a pair. And thanks so much for coming back to update us!

Congratulations on getting the name registered! And I agree with nedibes...I don't care much for sibling matchiness, but your two roll off the tongue pleasingly.

I'm really surprised at the blank reactions you've been getting -- I know three girls named Lorelai, and know of at least one more, so it's not exactly unheard-of in this day and age. (For comparison, I feel like I live in an Eleanor pocket, but only actually know two of them; and as popular as Charlotte is, again, I only know two personally.) I don't know how all the Lorelai's I know spell their names, but my default spelling is exactly the way you have it.

Congrats on your new baby girl, and don't let the, um, unworldliness of your acquaintances get you down. :)

Lorelai like Gilmore Girls may help some of the younger adults.
