Scandinavian girls name

We are expecting our 4th baby and first girl. Her brothers are Finn, Mikko and Kasper and we want to pick another scandinavian name.

i like

what do you think?

I feel like Lena goes best with Finn, Mikko and Kasper. Else is a nice name too, but there would be a lot of pronunciation issues.

March 4, 2014 4:45 PM

Yes Else might be better as Elsa. My boys are all into Disneys Frozen at the moment so they love that name. Lena I lI've but DH isn't sure and thinks everyone will say Lina which we don't like.

Congratulations on your daughter! Her brothers have great names. I like Lena, Else and Agnes, but as I love Scandinavian names I'm going to suggest some too.

svea is cute though kaspers middle name is svend so might be too much

I would call your list "names used in Scandinavia" rather than  "Scandinavian names."  Some Scandinavian names: Astrid/Asta, Sigrid, Bengta, Birgit/Berit/Britt, Dagmar, Dagny, Signy/Signe, Freya, Gudrun, Gerda, Gun(n)hild, Gyda, Inge/Inger/Ingrid, Liv, Solveig, Sunniva, Thora, Ulla, Ylva, Vigdis, Agnetha/Agneta, Aud, Kaia, Toril, Tove/Tova, Linnea, Viveka/Vivica.

I love asta but dh doesn't. my grandmother was Inga Agnetta and we did have Agnetta on the list but preferred Agnes. My parents almost called me viveca but I can't say I am a fan.

If you are in the U.S. (or someplace where Scandanavian style names aren't common) Bo will likely be taken for a boy's name.

Else is very pretty, but I can see it causing some confusion as people will want to say it like "or else" as opposed to Els-ah. Simply changing the spelling to Elsa would prevent this.

You're other names are very pretty and I think unlikely to cause confusion with native English speakers.  Matilda and Agnes are my favorites.

March 4, 2014 4:51 PM

I think Agnes and Matilda are my favs too. I like that they have cute nicknames.

i think Bo might be not so great when I have to spell it b.o poor kid might get teased

March 2, 2014 11:34 PM

Is Bo used for both boys and girls? We have a Swedish friend (male) whose first name is Bo. I know Bodil is a girl's name. You might consider the more familiar spelling Elsa if you choose that name.

March 4, 2014 4:52 PM

Yes for both male and female :)

I like Matilda, Lena, and Agnes.

I also recommend changing the spelling to Elsa if you are in an English-speaking country.

March 11, 2014 2:12 AM

I like Agnes, Matilda and Elsa, and I second others in the recommendation for the -a endings, at least if it's the call name. We used an -e ending for a middle name honoring a German family member, but if we'd gone with the name in the first name slot, we'd have switched the -e to an -a, because that's the only way to get the pronunciation you want in an English speaking country. (For a midlde name, it doesn't matter if anyone pronounces it the way you do, because they aren't pronounced much, period... so there I'd go with authenticity.)

Matilde would get Matild, Else would get Else like "or else"... it would be much more constant and hard to correct than Lina for Lena, I think.

I think the popularity of Frozen just made Elsa much more well-known, and thus people will even more likely assume Elsa rather than Else.

I know a little Bo/Beau, short for Isabeau, and I find it very charming... but as a full name, I think it's likely to feel very nicknamey and unfinished, here.

Lena is nice but the pronunciation issues would rule it out for me. Lay-na, Leh-nah, Lee-nah -- lots of correct options, and devlishly hard to remember which it was after the fact.

Thanks everyone :)

what do you think about Agnes vs. Agnetta?

also another late runner is Betty. My grandmother was Inger Betty Agnetta Nielsen but went by Betty. Inger has been used elsewhere in the family already plus it's not really a fav.

March 14, 2014 11:47 PM

Name her Agnes and use Agnetta as the nickname that it is.

Betty has two votes against it: it doesn't sound Scandinavian at all, and it's a nickname-as-full-name (which are not to my taste, see above about Agnes versus Agnetta).

I really do like Agnes, by the way. I couldn't use it, due to surname clash and because it's already taken elsewhere in the family, but I would love to hear it on a little girl.

March 15, 2014 12:35 AM

Yes Betty doesn't sound very scandinavian you are right.

I like aggie as a nickname for Agnes or Agnetta though netta/ Nettie is cute too.

I love your taste in names! When I saw you listed Lena, and since you are interested in scandanavian names, I immediately thought of one of my students' names, Linnea. It is not the same name at all, but it is scandanavian and flows nicely with your boys' names. It would also allow you to use one of the other names you have listed as a middle name. Happy naming:)

March 19, 2014 8:52 AM

I like Elsa from your list -- But I would spell it elsa not else

If you feel really brave you could name her Tobias to go with all your boys and call her Tobey! so cute!

5 weeks to go!

list has changed a little but still some stayers.

Matilda (Tilly)

Agnes (Aggie)

Theodora (Teddy/Teddie)

Greta (love this but dh not very keen. Possibly nn would be GG as our last name begins with G)

June 3, 2014 9:31 PM

I love Matilda nn Tilly.

What about Margareta nn Greta? That would likely get my first pick of those four.

Theodora takes third with Agnes nn Aggie in fourth.

June 4, 2014 5:00 AM

Middle names will be Margo Annie so margreta is a no go :)

hubbys fav is Matilda and least fav is Greta. My fav is Greta and least fav is Matilda hahaha so looks like it might be Theodora or Agnes.

June 4, 2014 8:37 AM

For me, Margo as a middle name would rule out Greta as a first name. I have a friend named Lisa, middle name Beth. She's good-humoredly resigned to it now, but she tells of her severe disappointment when she discovered sometime in grade school that she had the same name twice.

Much as I love Agnes, it's very similar to Annie, so in the interest of variety, I would vote for Matilda or Theodora. They're both great names (although not particularly Scandinavian in feel).

June 4, 2014 12:37 PM

With this info, then I would personally vote for Theodora as first with Matilda as a far distant second with Greta before Agnes but these being far far distant.

Margo with Greta and Agnes with Annie just doesn't work for me, Matilda has similar sounds with Margo and Annie, so Theodora wins hands down for me (although that a lot of "o").

June 4, 2014 7:49 PM

Margo and Annie are her grandmothers names :)

So might be Theodora then!

I can have any order with the middle names  though so could break up Agnes and Annie with Margo and same for Greta and

Though Agnes Margo is very despicable me movie!

June 5, 2014 2:36 AM

I think Matilda and Theodora are both strong and beautiful, and you've chosen great nicknames for them. But I find that Agnes, even Aggie, has such a choppy, unfeminine sound. I feel it doesn't go as well with the names of your other children as well as Matilda or Theodora.

June 3, 2014 11:44 PM

Lena Matilda is a beautiful name.

Karolina Agnetta is also pretty.

How about Annetta as a varient of Agnetta?

Annetta Else/ Annetta Lena

July 6, 2014 6:27 PM

Okay so little miss will arrive this Thursday :) the first name will either be Agnes (nn Aggie) or Theodora (nn teddy and or Thea) after eliminating Matilda as we decided we didn't want another M name And as New Zealanders we didn't want any waltzing Matilda comments hahaha.

Middle name name is to be Margo after Dh's late mum. Only thing is does it make you think of the despicable me movie when put with Agnes??? I asked dh about using late mother in law middle name instead if I pick Agnes. That would be Agnes elizabeth which I think sounds lovely But I think he really wants Margo. I like Theodora Margo though.

our boys are

finn peter

mikko alexander

kasper svend

i just love both Agnes and Theodora and am so torn. Wish it was twin girls!!!!
