The Maurice Jones-Drew effect

about college football players changing their surnames to honor parents and step-parents.

This definitely made me tear up a bit! Thank you so much for sharing the article. I love hearing name stories, and surname stories can be every bit as interesting as firstname stories when there's an active choice being made rather than a default.

I think it's interesting that the trend seems to be adding names with a hyphen, given that the hyphen is hotly disputed on these boards. That also seems to be the norm among my children's classmates and peers, too -- giving me hope that the hyphen will become less of a logistical hassle in years to come as they become more commonplace.

(It makes sense that these players would be preferentially adding names rather than swapping them out -- in the one instance where a name was being replaced, it seems to have been a bit of a delicate situation.)
