I love thinking about this. I often think of words I like hearing and saying. Using them as names might be confusing or stigmatic, but they are pretty words.

A few of my favorites:

As a writer, there is a key rule you must always remember. Every part of your story and every detail and event within must contribute significantly' to your purpose. Details must always be about plot and/or character development. Therefore, if your character is changing her name, you must 1. have a reason for that and 2. write it into your story. You can't just end one chapter calling her EV and then open a new chapter calling her Ella. The reader will not understand what is happening and they will continue to wonder what happened. You need to include the shift in name in your story.

That being said, my first name is Marie but when I was 13, I went through a rebellion/identity crisis and insisted everyone call me by my middle name. It was a significant character development time for me as I shifted to being unkind for a period of time as I found my way. Now I have been Elizabet for 21 years and am feeling it is simpler to go back to my first name because it is difficult explaining the discrepancy, somtimes I don't know what name to tell people, I have different names for family, legal purposes, and friends.

That said, it is common for children to shift their name as they find their identity. In a story setting, however, you must explain to the reader what happened.

Good luck!

Since this original post, there are 4 'Josh Duggar' kids. I find it fun that the original poster not only accurately predicted the first 4 genders, but also used 'Meredith Grace' as part of her answer!

Say: "I haven't heard that before. Where did you get it?"

Think: "Poor kid. What happened to respectible names?"

Besides Penelope (which I described above), the one that comes to mind is Lila. I used to read the "Sweet Valley Twins" book series so I only saw it in print and pronounced it "Lil-la". My younger sister used to read the "Sweet Valley Kids" books and she schooled me on how to pronouce it. LOL

Me, too! I learned the name Penelope on a Monopoly game I had on my Game Boy! I must have heard it sound out loud on a movie or show because I don't think I met a Penelope until a few years ago. I am a big fan of Penelop Garcia on Criminal Minds now, but I learned this name before that.

Most people in my social circle know me as 'Elizabeth'. For those who confuse my name, I am often called either 'Stephanie' or 'Melissa'. I have also been called 'Jennifer'.

My sister is named Karen and at one point in my life when my mom was talking about having another baby, she thought about the name Laura. Apparently she thought Karen and Laura went together, as well!

Marie Elizabeth - Marie was chosen after my mom's maid of honor, who she said was "a beautiful person, inside and out". Elizabeth was chosen because it means "consecrated to God". As a full name, 'Marie Elizabeth' means "living fragrance, consecrated to God".

Karen Ruth - I think my mom just like my sister's first name. She chose Ruth because it means 'compassionate'. She chose it because she wanted Karen to be a compassionate person because she saw that I was not! True story, to this day.

The other option for my sister was 'Stacey'. I think Marie and Karen goes together much better than Marie and Stacey.

In Response to Unexpected sibset

I don't often analyze sib set names, but as my childhood friend has added to her family I have been increasingly stirred by her chosen names.

Nolan James
Emily Rose
Aubrielle Naomi
Daphne Gwendolyn

Nolan and Emily's names didn't impress me, as I found them common and unimaginative. However, Aubrielle is a name she "made up" (she knew she wasn't the first to do so) and feels so much more modern and close to my own style. I was disappointed that they permanently shortened it to the less lovely 'Ellie'.

Daphne and Gwendolyn seem so different to me and unlikely as a full name (though they sound fine together). The name seems so uniquely old fashioned after the other three.
